Asbestos Management: Protecting Health and the Environment

Proper asbestos management is crucial to ensure the safety of workers, the public, and the environment. We are here to guide you through the entire process, from packaging to disposal.

Packaging of Asbestos: A Critical Step

The first step in responsible asbestos management is proper packaging. We’ve outlined guidelines for packaging various asbestos materials:

Asbestos Cement Sheetings and Pipes
  • Wetting: To prevent the release of hazardous fibers, thoroughly wet the articles and keep them wet until they are ready for transport.
  • Minimize Cutting: Whenever possible, minimize cutting or breaking of the articles to be packed.
  • Polythene Sheeting: Line the cargo-carrying compartment of the vehicle with two layers of polythene sheeting, each approximately 200 μm (0.2 mm) thick.
  • Careful Placement: Arrange articles on the polythene sheeting carefully, ensuring they are below a height of 1 meter.
  • Secure Wrapping: Completely wrap the articles using the polythene sheeting.
  • Sealing: Seal the package securely with adhesive tape.
  • Labeling: Clearly label the package with the asbestos warning mark.
Lagged Pipes, Boilers, Heaters, and Equipment
  • Double-Wrap: Ensure the entire article is double-wrapped with polythene sheets, each approximately 200 μm (0.2 mm) thick.
  • Secure Sealing: Seal the package with adhesive tape.
  • Labeling: Don’t forget to label the package with the asbestos warning mark.
Asbestos Dust and Friable Asbestos

Option 1: Drum Containment

  • Dust Discharge: Discharge dust into drums, ideally in wet conditions, unless wetting down is not practicable.
  • Secure Lid: Use a suitable device (e.g., toggle clips, screws, or bolts) to securely fix the drum lid.
  • Labeling: Each drum must be labeled with a dangerous goods label.
  • Additional Labeling: Label each drum with asbestos warning marks – at least three times on one side of each drum.

Option 2: Double Polythene Bags

  • Bagging: Discharge dust directly into double polythene bags, each approximately 200 μm (0.2 mm) thick. Ensure the bags do not exceed a maximum size of 1200 mm (length) x 900 mm (width) and do not exceed a loaded weight of 30 kg. Fill bags to not more than 50 percent capacity.
  • Wetting: Wet the bagged dust.
  • Tying: Securely tie each bag.
  • Labeling: Label each bag with a dangerous goods label.
  • Additional Labeling: Label each bag with asbestos warning marks – at least three times on one side of each bag.
Slurry Containing Asbestos Fibre and Dust
  • Fibre Removal: Remove fibres through chemical coagulation followed by filtration.
  • Drum Placement: Place the residue into drums as previously described.
  • Labeling: Label each drum with a dangerous goods label.
  • Additional Labeling: Label each drum with asbestos warning marks – at least three on one side of each drum.

Transportation: Protecting the Integrity of Packaging

During transport, it’s crucial to ensure that the packaging materials remain protected and intact. Any damaged packaging must be replaced or repaired before disposal. After transporting waste asbestos, our vehicles undergo thorough cleaning to prevent contamination.

Compliance is Our Priority

We understand the importance of compliance. The waste producer must provide a waste transport certificate. Both the waste transporter and the waste receiver must complete the appropriate sections of the certificate in accordance with the Regulations.

Responsible Disposal: Prompt and Secure

Asbestos waste must be disposed of as soon as is reasonably practicable. This typically means at the end of the removal job or when the waste containers are full. Additionally, waste on the removal site must be disposed of at the end of each day if it cannot be secured. Waste is considered secure when untrained or unprotected individuals cannot come into contact with it.
